Hubbie Said Yes!

When I first started this blog, Hubbie wasn’t necessarily on board with the alternative lifestyle concept or putting our lives out for the world to see. Hubbie’s preference was still to maintain the cul-de-sac lifestyle where we had the vehicles we wanted, a very nice house, careers, our animals… we were comfortable and from his perspective -

Why fix something that isn’t broken?

But it was broken for me. As I have said in previous posts, life was becoming a daily grind. There was too much consistency (an odd feeling for someone like myself that loves to plan), and time was flying by so quickly, I didn’t feel like there were many “whoas” being racked up. I appreciated the things that I had, but I wasn’t okay with the idea of maintaining that existence for the rest of our lives. We had achieved something and had enjoyed it for a bit. Now lets find a new thing to achieve!

Side note - I googled cul-de-sac to make sure I was spelling it correctly. Dictionary.com defines it as a street, lane, etc., closed at one end; blind alley; dead-end street. A DEAD-END! It only deepens my aversion to a cul-de-sac lifestyle! Now to be fair - our house technically wasn’t on a cul-de-sac… but you get the gist.

In time, Hubbie entertained more discussions of what RV life could be like. We talked about being able to see the country while we are physically able and while our dogs can join us, and being able to visit friends and family on a more flexible schedule. Slowly, he started to warm up to the idea, but wasn’t completely sold on the comforts of an RV. It had been years since he had been in one, and that had been a hunting trailer… so not the most opulent.

For this post, I drew the outline of a travel trailer (the top drawing) and asked him to fill in what he thought I meant when I originally suggested living in an RV. His reaction was that my template was too big! Below is what he imagined I was suggesting.

Right after Thanksgiving 2017, we went on a tour of RVs and he was pleasantly surprised. Fireplaces, big TVs, king sized beds - all way more than he had expected.

Finally, we agreed that there wasn’t really a way for us to partially try out the lifestyle. I say this with the understanding that there are ways to get your toes wet, but not that would work for us. For Hubbie - experience is key. He learns and makes decisions based on his experiences. For us to get our toes wet, it would have meant a very small trailer, which would have been more in line with his hunting trailer imagination… and he likely wouldn’t have been able to get past it. For us - we would need to sell the house and change vehicles in order to get the real experience. Asking him to give up all of the things he had worked so hard to achieve was a big ask. But he trusted me and said YES!

I am so excited to officially introduce Hubbie! I mean - Scott!

Scott was born and raised in Southeast Idaho and graduated high school early to join the Marine Corps Reserve unit based out of Salt Lake City. We met a little more than a year before he deployed to Iraq for a six month tour. His career goal was to become an electrician, so after we moved to Oregon, he joined the Electrical Apprenticeship program. Five and a half long years later, he journeyed out, passing the exam on his first attempt!

Scott is an avid Packers fan, and of football in general. He also loves camping, playing video games, and cooking on his Traeger grill.

Now, Scott is all in and at times, more excited than I am for this adventure. But, it would still take a bit before he could get there… more on that in a few posts.
